I recently had the pleasure of photographing a very special young boy for his First Holy Communion, and it couldn’t have been a more meaningful day. We chose Princeton University as our location, and honestly, it was the perfect setting. The historic buildings, peaceful courtyards, and quiet beauty of the campus created such a timeless and elegant backdrop for this milestone.
Why Princeton?
If you’ve ever walked through Princeton’s campus, you know how breathtaking it is. The mix of Gothic and colonial architecture, the ivy covered walls, and the charming little gardens everywhere, it all feels so peaceful . It gave us so many beautiful spots to work with, and each one added something special to the photos.
The Importance of the Moment
First Communion is more than just a photo opportunity it’s a deeply meaningful step in a child’s spiritual life. That’s why I always approach these sessions with care and intention. My goal is to capture not just how your child looks, but how they feel proud, a little nervous, maybe even a bit reflective. And this young man truly embodied all of that. He was kind, respectful, and carried himself with such quiet confidence.
Classic Outfits and Meaningful Details
He wore a traditional white suit, which looked incredibly sharp against the soft stone of Princeton’s buildings. We also included a few simple, symbolic accessories, his rosary, that added deeper meaning to the session. These little touches are what turn a pretty photo into a powerful memory.
Finding the Right Light
We planned the session around golden hour, which is the hour just after sunrise or before sunset when the light is soft and warm. It made such a difference that his portraits came out glowing and natural with that dreamy, peaceful feeling I always hope for. We also made sure to shoot during a quieter time of day to avoid crowds and distractions.
Natural, Heartfelt Moments
While I always make time for classic posed portraits, it’s often the in between moments that really capture the heart of the day.
What Comes Next
Once your photos are ready, I love helping families create keepsakes like Communion albums, framed prints, or even canvas wall art. These photos aren’t just for today, they’re meant to be cherished for years to come.
And of course, many families want to share a few favorites online. I always suggest pairing them with a short, heartfelt caption to let loved ones share in the joy of the moment.
Final Thoughts
This Communion session at Princeton was such a joy to be a part of. The beauty of the campus, the sacredness of the occasion, and the warmth of this wonderful family all came together perfectly.
